Our philosophy is of prompt access to specialist surgeons, providing time and attention to patients in a centre with excellent facilities.
The Shoulder Unit at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was established in 1991 and is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of injuries and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow.
The unit has a national and international reputation for the treatment of shoulder and elbow problems, including sports injuries, complex or revision procedures, trauma and conditions associated with aging.
The Shoulder Unit has close links with many national and regional sporting organisations and performing arts companies. We treat players from a majority of the UK's premiership rugby clubs as well as elite athletes from other sports including tennis, Olympic and Paralympic athletics, football, iceskating and motorcross.
The team comprises four surgeons (Mr Philip Ahrens, Mr Carlos Cobiella, Mr Steven Corbett, Mr Andrew Wallace), a sports physician and rheumatologist, specialist anaesthetists including pain consultants, physiotherapists and radiologists. The Shoulder Unit can provide consultations, specialist imaging, physiotherapy and state of the art surgical facilities under one roof in a clean and pleasant environment in Central London.
The Unit is fully equipped to surgically and conservatively manage all types of shoulder and elbow disorders using state of the art technology. We are specialists in keyhole surgery which has shorter and less painful recovery times than conventional open surgery.
